As stated above the Karoo Budgerigar Club was formed in 1989 and below is a list of the chairpersons since then.
The History of the Club
Karoo Budgerigar Club was established on the 20 January 1989 at Graaff-Reinet. The founder members were Mr G J Nel, Mr A P Jacobs, Mrs G van Aswegen, Mr G J van Rooyen, Mr A D Kleu, Mr D Green, Mr G Freisen and Mr J Herion. Mr G J Nel was elected as the first Chairman.
The Club hosted the first Eastern Cape Provincial Show in Graaff-Reinet in 1993 with 770 birds benched. In 1996, a number of members from the Karoo Budgerigar Club who were staying in the Southern Cape Area established a new Club namely Garden Route Budgerigar Club.
In 1997 the second Eastern Cape Provincial Show was held in Cradock. The Show Committee of this show were all Beginners, with no previous show hosting experience. From 1997 to date the Karoo Budgerigar Club hosted all but three Provincial Shows which were all held in Cradock.
In 2006 most of the members of Garden Route Budgerigar Club rejoined the Karoo Budgerigar Club and the GRBC seized to exist.
In 2007 & 2011 Karoo Budgerigar Club hosted 2 very successful National Shows. Notwithstanding the decline in the hobby in recent years the Karoo Budgerigar Club is still managing to attract entries beyond 700 and more with a final entry of 1013 at the 2011 National.
The Karoo Budgerigar Club achieved something that has never been done before by winning the Champion of Section awards in all three sections for two years consecutively (2010 & 2011). We are currently the largest club in South Africa with members from all over the country including Namibia.
